My blog has been a bit quiet of late. I’ve been taking some time away from the laptop since it became the centre of my entire to-do list. For a designer that is not good. I needed a break.
Writing the blog has been one thing that has bothered me for a while. I am not a writer. I’m a lover of note taking and sporadic jotting, but have never written a regular personal diary. Nonetheless, I want to write a blog, I feel drawn to doing it. I see it as a way to give structure to some of the many fleeting ideas and inspirations that fly through my head, and as a channel to share stories and experiences with like-minded people.
Gauging the right tone for my blog has always baffled me. In Heidi Cohen’s blog she quotes Dr Seuss “There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
This is the thing!
I absolutely love to read blogs that document people’s day-to-day lives doing creative things that they love. One that springs to mind is Tales of Ted and Agnes and their rural ramblings.
When it comes to my own blog I find myself resisting, stuck in the ‘no-one wants to read this crap’ camp. However, I’ve had an epiphany moment of late; I’ve decided to throw caution to the wind and up my blogging game. Thanks in part to the e-course I have recently completed called What Retailers Want.
Having spent many an evening reading Claire’s blog (founded of What Retailers Want course) and, after initial resistance, falling in love with her weird and wonderful anecdotes, I knew that I wanted to be more of the real me. I have decided to make my blog more personal, so that it is more of a joy to write, and hopefully more of a pleasure to read!
Now I can’t promise the wise cracks, but what I can offer is stories about my life and challenges as an eco designer trying to make it (well, my idea of ‘making it’ anyway).
I’ll be sharing my experiences as a designer working with artisans in India, the highs and lows of setting up a business single-handedly and how to incorporate sustainability into the everyday. I’ll be documenting my passion for beautiful imagery, textiles, colour, pattern, texture and anything else that takes my fancy (like my dream small-holding in the country!).
I would love to share your experiences too. There are so many amazing people out there pursuing their own interesting and creative things. Maybe you, like me, work in a room on your own most days, even stay in your pyjamas some days. It would be lovely to share stories and give each other comfort that this is, in fact, perfectly normal.
